An Apple a Day…

by: JoAnn Schinderle Community Networking Coordinator

Brown and gold leaves are covering the ground, the air is turning crisp, and Fall is coming to an end.  Before the big cold hits, some people are taking last chance efforts to be active outdoors in their communities. HOTC AmeriCorps Members took an opportunity to do just that. Last week, HOTC affiliate, Second Harvest Heartland teamed up with a local apple orchard to do one last apple gleaning of the season.  Over 30 volunteers showed up to pick every last edible apple they could. As part of Second Harvest’s on-going effort to end hunger, boxes upon boxes were filled with plump fruit that will be shipped to area homeless shelters and food shelves to secure fresh produce for those in need.
