Capitol Hill Magnet School- ‘Global Feast’

Good Morning Fellow Do-Gooders!

I want to share with you all the wonderful work that was done at Capitol Hill Magnet School in Saint Paul with the help of American Express & Delta volunteers, family & friends of the school, and HOTC! The theme was ‘Global Feast’, and we engaged 1st & 4th graders in school projects to promote sustainable, healthy food selections.

230 potting kits filled with awesome herbs such as Cilantro, Chives, Garlic, & basil went out to the students with instructions on how to grow and eventually eat.

NOM NOM NOM- I can’t wait to cook with the herbs I’m starting to grow!

For lunch we had a special guest speaker come in, Stewart Woodman from Heidi’s Restaurant, to demonstrate how to make spring rolls. They were de-lic-ious ! Several kids got to join in the demonstration and so did I !!

Outside, volunteers made a Salsa Garden from scratch so classrooms can join in the upkeep and reap the benefits of having a sustainable garden right outside their school! Another group of volunteers made mosaic stepping stones for the garden to be not only decorative but useful for the kids to step on while watering the plants.

The unpredictable MN weather put a damper (more like a monsoon) on some of the planned youth engagement projects, but the volunteers were literally like sticks in the mud and powered through to completion!

Thank you to everyone who made that day possible and good luck Capitol Hill in nurturing the salsa garden! I’ll see you in the fall with some tortilla chips- ready to eat!

ps. here is a picture of me and Chef Stewart Woodman and Heidi  from Heidi’s Resturant! Thanks for letting me help! (don’t mind that i look like a pirate in this picture, aarrgghh shiver me’spring rolls!)
